City Guide

BUDAPEST

TASTE

If you’re image of Hungarian food is rich and heavy, then you’d be right, but these Hungarian favourites are also hearty and packed full of flavour. One of Hungary’s favourite dishes, Paprikás Csirke (Chicken Paprikash) is a chicken dish with a generous helping of paprika, severed with sour cream and spätzle, a pasta-like dumpling.

And if you’ve still got room for dessert, try some Dobos Torte, a sponge cake layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with caramel.

SEE

Venture to the Citadella fortress in the hills of Buda, for panoramic views of the whole city and take in the iconic Parliament Building, Buda Castle, St. Stephen's Basilica and the mighty Danube river which divides the city into the two districts of Buda and Pest.

Visit the moving ‘Shoes on the Danube’ Holocaust Memorial created by Gyula Pauler and Can Togay in 2005. Located on the Pest side of the river close to the Parliament building, the 60 pairs of cast iron shoes commemorate victims who were shot and fell into the river by the Nazis towards the end of the war.

PLAY

You can’t visit the city of spas without taking to the waters, as the natives have done since Roman times. Known by locals as one of the ‘secret spots of Budapest’ the Veli bej (also known as Császár) baths are less crowded than there better known neighbours and allow you a chance to relax and unwind in the hot-water thermal pools, Jacuzzi, steam baths and various saunas, including an infra-sauna.
